Good to see you stayed in Hong Kong for a couple days; I'll have to read more about your trip to see if you made it down to Stanley, where I stayed for a month. On your second world tour are you going to hit Australia and NZ? |

RE: Day 187 - Vienna and Wrapping up Aus Written by Christi on 2006-07-01 14:10:07 M & J, Though this is temporarily your last day, the adventure never stops. Your travels will change how you see even the smallest details of everyday life. Congratulations you two! |
RE: Day 186 - Vienna Written by Judy Kip on 2006-07-01 10:40:35 Junior and Jaimie, How will I start my days now without yur blog to read? We'd love to have you stop in while you're in NY state. We are quiet AND we have AC -- not that we've needed it yet this summer. Thanks for sharing you adventures! Judy Kip |
RE: Day 185 - Vienna Written by Jax on 2006-06-29 17:08:51 Those horses looked beautiful. One of my favorite Disney movies was about the Lippizanner stallions. Glad you got to see them. |
RE: Day 184 - Vienna Written by Danielle on 2006-06-28 22:23:35 Hi guys! Thanks for the in depth history, especially the part about the Jewish extermination in WWII. My grandfather was born in Vienna and fled to Paris when he was 16. His entire family stayed behind and were all murdered. After the war was over, and he couldn't find any of them, he came to Philadelphia. It is so interesting to see your pictures and hear your stories. One day Brendan and I will travel there to reconnect with my roots. Enjoy the rest of Vienna! Miss you guys! It was great seeing you at our wedding :) |

RE: Day 177 - Budapest Written by Nittany Lion on 2006-06-23 13:22:44 Was it better than the falafel at Pita Pit at Penn State? |
RE: Day 178 - Gyor Written by Gail Noyes on 2006-06-28 13:34:35 Jaimie and Mario, I am sad that your trip is winding down. I am a faithful reader, so hopefully you will write a book. Of course I also follow the Cal and Indy web site. This trip has been amazing, we can't wait to see you sometime, sorry we will miss you at the lake. Love Aunt Gail |
RE: Day 177 - Budapest Written by Tara on 2006-06-22 20:07:37 Aren't falafels the best!! I swear, no place in the US has falafels like Europe -- they are so fresh and tasty! And you gotta love all the toppings they have for you to stuff into your Pita until it is overflowing with goodness :) So happy you found a yummy place! Mario really missed out :) Ciao! |
RE: Day 178 - Gyor Written by Jax on 2006-06-22 17:40:21 We can guarantee a quiet night sleep at the cottage. Unfortunately, no AC. :-( |
RE: Comments Written by Kim & Gary on 2006-06-22 12:37:32 I'm glad you kids had the opportunity to travel and see the world at such a young age. You two should write a book about your journey because I'm sure you could give future travlers some helpful information. Can't wait until you two return so we can play some cards again. Can you beleive that we haven't played once since you've been gone. I guess you guys are the life of the parties. See ya soon. Kim & Gary |
RE: Day 177 - Budapest Written by Jax on 2006-06-21 16:33:51 The description of your falafel is really making me hungary. |
RE: Day 176 - Budapest Written by Jax on 2006-06-21 14:21:31 Jaimie, do you remember going to see Sting when you were around 16? Crazy that you saw them again but in Hungary! |
RE: Day 175 - Budapest Written by Jax on 2006-06-19 18:30:47 Reminds me of a mistake in Kyoto! Good thing you were able to change trains. |
RE: Day 173 - Eger Written by Jax on 2006-06-18 10:07:35 Sounds like a better bargain than 3 buck Charles Shaw! It might be hard to bring back too many jugs on the plane. |
RE: Day 170 - Brasov Written by Jax on 2006-06-14 14:46:58 Make sure you cover up your necks while sleeping! |

RE: Day 156 - St Petersburg Written by Brendan on 2006-06-10 15:04:59 I would have loved that taxi ride over the curb and through the park grass/mud in St. Petersburg, with police hot on the chase! :) I'm just glad the taxi didn't get a flat tire hitting the curb - good thing he wasn't looking for cheesesteaks, haha. :) Sounds like the script for a European Vacation style movie is shaping up nicely. Call it 180 Days? |

RE: Day 160 - Wrapping up Russia Written by Tara on 2006-06-05 15:16:26 Amazing pics you guys! Can't believe your trip is almost wrapping up! I've been taking various pics at different angles of my cubicle if you're interested in seeing them :) haha. Gosh I'm jealous of your worldly travels, but your pictures have provided some solace :) Hope you recover quickly from your sinus cold, Jaimie. Be sure to eat lots of falafels in Istanbul -- so good there! And stock up on the chocolate is Austria. Happy and safe travels to you both. Love, Tara |
RE: Day 160 - Wrapping up Russia Written by christi on 2006-06-05 15:02:41 Sounds like you guys are "big-citied-out"! Those grumps behind counters in Russia retain the demeanor of Communist service. All store workers were once government employees, and maintained a very efficient, serious nature when dealing w/ fellow "comrades". To be overly friendly with "desk people" goes against a long established social behavior. Mimic the "official" air service people have and you will gain respect and things will come off smoothly... |
Russian Guacamole Written by Ann Chiaramonti on 2006-06-05 14:22:33 I had to laugh out loud when I read that you guys got to experince the wonderful flavors of Soviet guacamole. As far as I can tell, it is a Russian standard to do such weird things. My friend from Odessa always put in eggs, sometimes also mayonaise or sour cream, too. I guess they don't really go with the idea of letting the simple flavors come through. Glad to hear your're both having a good time. :) Ann |
RE: Day 160 - Wrapping up Russia Written by Britta on 2006-06-05 11:21:44 Hi Mario and Jaimie! It's my first time corresponding and I happen to be in Stockholm with my parents because my dad has the European Financial Management Assn. Conference to attend and I chose to tag along. We just missed you! Today is Day 1 here and we are interested in seeing all that have seen. I think the Ice Bar will have to top the list. Unfortunately, within our first 6 or so hrs here, we have dealt with the police twice because my mom's purse was stolen and our hotel room was robbed. We'll have to change your safety rating... Have fun wrapping up you trip!! |
RE: Day 160 - Wrapping up Russia Written by mom on 2006-06-05 07:57:19 loved all your news, hoping to see and visit with us in Italy after the 17th. love, mother |

RE: Day 157 - Moscow Written by Anne on 2006-06-02 20:22:10 Enjoy Russia!!! Just wondering, are you ready for a home cooked meal yet, or is the variety of food enough to keep you from missing good 'ole home cooking? |
RE: Day 156 - St Petersburg Written by Christi on 2006-06-01 14:41:28 Glad you experienced the kind-heartedness of the Russian soul, especially in St. Pete's. This remains most unexpected and encouraging given all the western propaganda...Enjoy! |

RE: Day 155 - St Petersburg Written by Christi on 2006-05-30 19:44:57 Sorry I can't write all at once... you can see some nice views of the city from the other side of the Neva River (take a bus across, or walk, to Peter and Paul Fortress). This is one of the oldest structures. Maybe they'll let you climb the lighthouse... Thanks for the cat pic, Jr., the cats there are hyper-intelligent.. must be all the radiation. |
RE: Day 155 - St Petersburg Written by Christi on 2006-05-30 19:35:03 Oh, and the boat that takes you to the summer palace is called a hydrofoil, not a hydroplane, but it does ride above the water like a plane... |
RE: Day 155 - St Petersburg Written by Christi on 2006-05-30 19:33:14 The buses that go down Nevsky might be easier than subways b/c you can usually see where you are, however the lack of use of deodorant on a crowded summer bus can be off-putting... Glad you tried some icecream! |
RE: Day 154 - St Petersburg Written by Christi on 2006-05-30 18:05:42 Hey guys, check out the hotel Astoria, right by St. Issac's, it is beautiful inside if you need a haven from other digs, they may also have a store w/water and good restaurant. Jaimie, women drink cognac there, again, it's some of the best... |
St. Petersburg Written by Tony and Christi on 2006-05-28 14:51:36 Three days is too brief in St. Petersburg! Don't miss Picasso's blue-period paintings in the Hermitage. Also, check out St. Issac's cathedral not far from there. A day trip to the summer palace would be fun, take the hydroplane on the Neva River which boards behind the Hermitage (Winter Palace). Ballet is mediocre and over-priced since the best troupes dance exclusively abroad, philharmonic is superior: get a native to buy your tix and go with you for good prices. Check out an operating church, my fav is Alexander's at the top end of Nevsky Prospect (past train station). Lots of famous people buried there. Slip an attendant a $5 or $10 to get to sacred 2nd floor of church where weddings are held. All of the churches are worth seeing. One phrase that will get hasslers away is "nee nada" which translates to, "it's not necessary". Call me or ask someone for proper pronounciation. Go to the black market, you can get good mementos at bargain prices (if you bargain). It is usually not far from Nevsky, and you will need dollars. The prices will be better here than in Moscow. You can also exchange $$$ at the market. Have fun! Eat the icecream sold on the street..it's some of the best in the world. |
RE: Day 139 - Kyoto and Wrapping up Japa Written by Yos on 2006-05-24 14:42:55 I have to agree, I love the atomic wedgie too! :) It was great meeting you two at B and D's wedding! Great pics and have fun on the rest of your travels!! -Yos |

RE: Day 132 - Wrapping up China Written by Yi on 2006-05-20 23:54:20 I have to share some different thoughts: food: I really think it's a matter of finding the right places and the right stuff to order. I personally never ate chicken feet, liver or anything odd like that growing up (nor did any of my family or many of my friends). Just because there is one or two scary items on the menu doesn't mean you have to starve or resort to non-Chinese. A big (and possibly the biggest) part of our culture is all about food. Missing out on what could have been a wonderfully memorable adventure is just like missing out on the Wall or the Warriors. Sorry! language: I'm shocked to see how FEW people you found that spoke english. Beijing is one of the cities with highest education and even my 64-yr-old parents (who only took Russian in school b/c of the political situation at the time) can carry some simple conversations with Aaron's grandparents! Today everybody takes English classes from grade school and most high-school educated people can speak a few sentences. In fact, if you went to Beijing's financial district, you would find that many Chinese have English names and talk to each other in half-Chinese-half-English. I think the situation you were in was again a result of the Golden week. During this time most people at the tourist sites are out-of-towners, many of whom are not as educated in english, or used to seeing foreigners around and therefore found YOU as the "exortic attraction". :) BTW, why can't I see my own comment right after sending it? Is this being sensored somehow? (J/K) :P |
RE: Day 131 - Xi'an Written by Yi on 2006-05-20 23:29:00 glad to see that you finally met some nice Chinese over there! :) There is actually much more hospitality and warmth to the chinese culture, which unfortunately is hard to find for an american travelling to tourist sites with zillions of other people traveling at the same time or trying to rip you off! when we went to Xi'an, we took the overnight sleeper train, which is also a nice alternative (the only downside is that you'd have to go for 2 days without showering, so make sure you pack enough deodorant!) :P i also never knew that one could find Indian food in China.---you can learn something from anyone, even from an foreigner about your own country! :) |
RE: Day 129 - Great Wall of China Written by Yi on 2006-05-20 23:11:51 I'm ashamed (as well as impressed!) myself to see how persisitent the vendors were! :( Foreigners (especially at tourist sites) are believed to be rich and willing to buy anything at any price. I practically had to constantly peel vendors off Aaron's family's backs for the entire time that we were in China. The only better part is that I could say "no" in Chinese. It's a shame to see that you didn't get to enjoy the very good Chinese food. The 7 of us managed to go for 10 days (and 20 for Aaron and me) without heading into McDonald's, Starbucks, HRC or Outback (actually, i have yet to try a HRC here in the US). The food is actually extremely delicious, cheap and safe if you know where to go and what to get. Oh well...next time! :) |
RE: Day 128 - Beijing Written by Yi on 2006-05-20 22:49:12 You should have totally asked me or Aaron for tips on breakfast places! We stayed at the "Macopolo" in Xidan which offered scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon and sausage for breakfast everyday!---In fact, we got so sick of eating American-style breakfast that after a few days we had to get the $1 street eats. Unfortunately May1-7 is just about the worst time to visit China. Every Chinese has the week off and it seems all 13 billion of them (or I should say, us) are out on the streets! |
RE: Day 127 - Beijing Written by Yi on 2006-05-20 22:36:35 Nice site man! I was VERY surprised to learn that you saw only a few other non-Chinese around Beijing and became the center of attention. When I took Aaron and 5 (yes, FIVE!) of his family members with me to Beijing and Xi'an, we blended quite well with the million other foreign tour groups and were barely noticable, even in a crowded subway car. I on the other hand, was the unlucky one: obviously seen as the "tour guide", I got the dirtiest look from the hotel staff when I requested a room with a king bed to share with Aaron! :( |
RE: Comments Written by Don Chesworth on 2006-05-18 10:28:05 to answer your 6 ?s about daylight savings from Chile - it's 2 hours diff because when NY "springs forward," Santiago "falls back." way dope, huh - but you prolly already figured that out. Just talked to Jin Lin and she told me you were on this trip! too bad i found about about you being in Stgo 5 months late - because I LIVE in Stgo. Hope you remember me Mario (from Verizon Fed/PwC in Beltsville!!). Love the site. Chao... |

RE: Day 131 - Xi'an Written by Marla on 2006-05-07 18:57:52 Email from Bill: I am SHOCKED that they were able to take the pics of the Xian terra cotta IN the airplane hangar. That was a no-no in l988 and again in 1996. Strickly against policy since the Chinese wanted you to buy THEIR pics and slides. I am curious as to how they got away with this. The pics are great though. How did you do it, Mario? Marla |
RE: Day 127 - Beijing Written by Bill on 2006-05-06 07:39:27 Hi, I am a friend of Bill and Cathy's in Tucson. I have lived and worked in China for the past 20 years. Be sure you get into the hutongs in Beijing and if you want to see the most spectacular section of the Great Wall, go to Simitai.....Badaling is the tourist gig while Mutianyu is not so busy. Be sure you go to one of the Peking Opera houses for an evening performance. The Summer Palace is worth seeing, but will be busy as May Day winds down. Be sure to have some Peking Duck.........a must!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy............ |

RE: Day 89 - Delhi Written by Tushar on 2006-04-26 20:01:38 Mario, Very well written. Even among local tourists, Delhi is famous (infamous) for scam artists. I am glad you just lost some time and not much else. I wish you'd gone to Bombay instead. Great pictures. Say hi to Jaimie for me. |
RE: Day 116 - Hoi An Written by D on 2006-04-24 14:45:35 So, is the ring the 'skeels' ring, or what? No way you can leave that out of the story if that is in fact the case. You guys rock. RE: Day 89 - Delhi Written by Gail Stone on 2006-04-13 15:21:34 I am sure glad you had some good experiences to go with the bad. We just wanted to walk to a park near our hotel and a little 3 wheeled taxi driver would not leave us alone.. We finally gave up and went with him. We wanted to go to Caughnaut Place too, but never made it. He took us to a place that sold rugs and other Indian made products. We were afraid he might never take us back to our hotel. He did and we were so thankful that we gave him extra money. The rest of the time we were with a tour guide and not bothered by touts, but I really wanted to go to Delhi and get to know the man on the street. This seems very difficult considering all the people who want to take you where they want. |
RE: Day 103 - Phuket Written by Horenstein on 2006-04-11 11:26:26 What about the television in your room? Cable? How did you survive? I've had a TV in my room all my life and I'm not about to stop now. The bathroom in your bungalow still looked better than Aaron and Jack's bathroom at Penn State.

Happy Birthday to Jaimie on the 29. Send a post card if you get a chance. The picture with the rainbow was very nice. Hope to see you soon. |
RE: Day 75 - Ngorongoro Crater Written by Marla Jackson and Betsy McDona on 2006-03-16 18:01:27 We are so glad to see this part of Africa again through your words and camera. Our three safaris to Kenya, Tanzania and beyond were all in the summer because of work. We stayed in tented camps and lodges. It's green! So that's what a baobob looks like leafed out, we said. As always your insight and eyesight is a wonderful adventure for us as we "travel" with you around the world. We are friends of Bill and Cathy Cross. |
RE: Comments Written by Aaron Gitler on 2006-03-14 20:42:35 Hi Mario and Jaimie, It's been great fun to keep track of your adventures! The pictures are amazing as are the stories. RE: Day 20 - Wrapping up Panama Written by Rudy Lopez on 2006-02-15 22:15:47 Hola Jaimie y Mario, What an impressive website, the format, the pictures, not to mention your wonderful descriptive writing. You are both extremely good writers, congratulation; awesome ten times over. Maria & I are so happy for you, what an adventure of a life time. Thank you for sharing it with us. Well, I hope by now you have gotten some good sleep and some good food without any birds/monkeys keeping you up, or false fire alarms pulling you from your meals. Back in Nicaragua you mentioned that you had some rice & beans which is called gallo pinto, one of Maria’s & Matteo’s favorite foods. I am several countries behind you, but I hope to catch up to you in Brazil. I don’t know where in Brazil you plan to visit, just make sure you stay safe. I traveled to Sao Paulo & Rio, and I’d like to pass on some advice we got from a local who was robbed several times. He said to always carry some money to hand the robbers. This way they won’t harm you. Keep up the awesome story telling of your wonderful adventure; it is definitely fun to follow your trip. You guys are always in our thoughts. Hugs and kisses from, Matteo, Maria & Rudy

RE: Day 20 - Wrapping up Panama Written by Manny De La Hoz Sr. on 2006-02-12 11:19:00 Hi Mario & Jaimie I reviewed some of the great pictures and read some of your comments that make me laugh because they make me remember some of my experiences early in my life. The windy night and its effects on the corrugated zinc roof and the windy trip on the ferry in one of the countries in Central America. Yes.. I can relate to that. Have fun, Manny Sr. |
RE: What you missed most! Written by Lill on 2006-02-11 21:06:27 I just noticed you posted what you miss most back home. I KNEW you missed Breyers Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. I was just having some the other day and thinking, "Mmmm, I wonder if my brother has had any ice cream lately!" ; ) However, I'm sure your experiences are far greater than ice cream! |
RE: Day 45 - Iguazu Falls and wrapping u Written by Gail Stone on 2006-02-11 14:37:09 I am so looking forward to going to Argentina and Iguazu Falls. You make it sound great and I already wanted to go before this. |

RE: Day 39 - Puerto Natales Written by Greg on 2006-02-04 22:23:03 Got your email last week -- thanks for the thoughts! It is cold in Colorado, but I cranked your new furnace, so at least Colorado Springs is warm. At any rate, there are no penguins. Travel safely! And keep those incredible photos coming. |
RE: Day 34 - Punta Arenas Written by Whiskers on 2006-02-03 13:23:13 Those penguins sure know how to dress! |
RE: Day 9 - Granada Written by Maria & Matteo on 2006-02-03 11:32:50 Mario & Jaimie, I'm so mad at Rudy for not sharing this website with me before. It's amazing! I absolutely loved looking at all the places you've covered so far, and really enjoyed reading and watching the pictures of Nicaragua. My family is from there, and I have some strong ties to the country. It's nice to read about it through someone else's eyes. I couldn't help but laugh as I read about your rice, beans, & cheese diet.... It's called gallo pinto and it's Matteo's favorite... Enjoy the rest of your trip, and I look forward to your next adventure. Take care, and be safe! |

RE: Day 33 - Vina Del Mar Written by Marcia & Stan Gitler on 2006-02-02 17:43:03 Hi Mario and Jaimie, We've been following your trip with great interest. When we went to the Antartic, we stopped in Punta Arenas. Of interest to us was their amazing cemetery. There is a place in town where you can rent bikes to get around town and there is plenty of internet in town. If you are going to see the penguins, we heard from people on our trip that Otway was not that good. Magdalena Island is the more scenic and has the most penguins. Enjoy |
RE: Day 21 - Cusco Written by Gail Stone on 2006-02-02 17:40:55 I haven't been able to read all your comment, but I have found your trip very interesting so far. I wish we could do it! Love your pictures. Continue to have a great trip.

RE: Day 28 - Wrapping up Peru Written by Mary Bonawitz on 2006-01-26 20:43:17 This is Annemarie's mom. She sent me your website. Thanks for your wonderful photos. I always wanted to do the Inca Trail, but I think it is too physically demanding now for me, so I am glad that Annemarie could do it. Too bad that it had to be done in three days, not four. Good luck on your tour.

RE: Day 25 - The Inca Trail Written by Brendan on 2006-01-24 22:47:45 Great to see the updates again! 5 days with no new amazing photos or stories? - we're spoiled! I actually caught a travel show on tv this weekend that showed Cusco and Machu Pichu... and I must say Mario, your photos do the place better justice than their video! But my friend, go easy on the "coca" ... remember amsterdam, "you can get a lot of things to glow here for twenty dollars" haha. Cheers! I need another Whopper meal |
