Even though the bagels yesterday weren't the best, they were pretty much our only known option. We returned there today and this time they at least were able to fill my order right. The girl behind the counter was new and even asked us if we wanted our bagels toasted! A nice bonus. We had to eat fast in order to make it to our 10:01am train to Vienna. |

We set off to tour in and around Innere Stradt, Vienna's city center. Vienna itself began in the Innere Stradt as a Roman camp. But, in fact, the Romans weren't the first ones in the area. A statue has been found near Vienna which dates back 25,000 years (yes, that's 18,000 years before the Egyptian dynasties!). Unbelievable. There's even another statue that's from 32,000 BC from another location in Austria - the earliest known statue in existence, which is also housed in a Vienna museum. The Romans arrived in Austria in 15 BC, and founded the earliest settlements in Vienna in 8 AD. Vienna flourished until the 5th century, when the Roman Empire collapsed. |

We woke up to another thunder storm this morning. We had been planning on going out earlier in order to catch a few of the buildings in better light than we'd seen yesterday. However, with the very overcast sky and rain, we opted to sleep in instead. As we left, it was still drizzling lightly, and we had to bring our raincoats with us. We stopped at a small cafe for a quick breakfast of an apple strudel (supposedly invented in Austria) and a latte. |

It was time to escape Vienna and see the suburbs. We were attracted to the town of Krems, as it's the "center" of the Wacau wine trade in Austria. For breakfast, we picked up a coffee and apple streudel just outside our hotel lobby. While Jaimie is overwhelmed by the pastry shops (not a big fan of them), I enjoy a pastry shop every 30 feet. They're never that far from reach (granted, it seems that Anker seems to be a chain here, and has the market cornered on pastry shops, offering the same selection over and over :)). |

On our last day in Vienna, we took it easy and just tried to enjoy our final day of traveling. It is hard to believe that this is our final day on the road (not counting the long, long flight tomorrow :). It was another windy and cloudy day today with a large threat of rain. We wanted to check out the Globe Museum where they have some really old maps of the world, but upon checking our guidebook we realized it was closed on weekends. I guess we should have thought of that earlier. :( |
