The 11 hour train ride to Budapest wasn't that bad. We were sleeping on top of the brakes unfortunately, so the noise was a bit loud - but didn't prevent us from sleeping. We had to stop at the Romanian and, shortly thereafter, the Hungarian border for immigration at around 4am. While performing his duties as he should, the Hungarian customs officer made me take out the chess set. This was a bit annoying, as we had very little tape to piece the homemade box back together, but whatever. I guess I was just bothered that I had left it in plain sight - as I could have lots of illegal items in the sink, under the bed, in the blankets, etc. ;0 Lucky for the world I don't work for organized crime. |

We had a nice day off from touring today. We got to bed early last night and made up for the somewhat sleepless night on the train. Our room was quiet and dark, and we slept in a bit. We were a little bit disappointed with the free breakfast though, as the milk for the cereal was warm, the eggs were watery, and there was no juice to be found. |

There's only so many days of wine, cheese, rest, and sun that you can take - we just haven't reached it. :) Well, we did walk into town to find Jaimie a book. Unfortunately, everything is closed because it's Sunday. But the beauty of the town made up for the lost book cause. The central part of town was pedestrian only, with narrow cobble stone streets and restaurants popping out here and there. We walked through the beautiful town square, with it's equally beautiful tall 19th century cathedral. This cathedral is the second largest in Hungary, so we popped in for a view. |

We had only 1/2 a day left of relaxing in the sun before we were back ti touring again. We decided to make the most of it, and hung out by the pool for a few hours until it was time to check out. Unfortunately, the hotel wouldn't let us check out at 1:30pm instead of the normal 12pm time. Funny, because in the miscommunication of asking them for the late checkout, they thought we wanted to stay 1 extra night. Apparently, that was OK, but checking out an hour and a half late was not OK since they needed to get the room ready for "new occupants". |

We had our small breakfast this morning, and were out pretty quick. We headed out to Buda, the hilly part of the city, across the Danube River. As we crossed the bridge, we took in beautiful views of both Buda and Pest. We wanted to just have a fun stroll along the castles, bastions, and churches along Buda. Instead, we found ourselves challenged by the intensity of the heat, and the steepness of the Citadella hill. We passed St. Gellert Statue, and climbed the many stairs and trails leading to the top. Always wonderful after a good climb, is the expansive views that greet you at the top - and this climb was no different. At the top, the sun lit up the city for us. |
