Day 167 - Bucharest PDF

Today, our only goal was to get from Veliko Tarnovo to Bucharest, Romania.  It's not actually that far in miles between the cities, but the transportation in both of these countries happens to be very, very slow.  We had breakfast at our hotel and packed up.  The train was scheduled to leave at 10:43am, and we had already walked by the train station yesterday and knew where it was.  It was a good thing, because before we knew it, it was 10:20 and we were just leaving the hotel.  We had to walk as fast as possible, carrying all of our stuff to make it there in time.  Lucky for us, the walk was straight forward, because one wrong turn and we would get there too late.

Ok - today was just too crazy to not detail the craziness.  Sorry about the length!

The Comfort Inn said "we could" have room service for breakfast (aka, there's no where to eat, please eat in the room :)).  We had pancakes (aka crepes) for breakfast.    They were pretty good.    The "suite" we were staying in was booked tonight, so we had to leave.   We were happy to leave, the room was a bit grotty.  Despite A/C included, there was no air.  I went downstairs to ask about the A/C, as I couldn't find anywhere to turn it on.  The front desk lady said, "oh, all rooms in the hotel but 2 have AC.  Yours is one of them".   She didn't feel bad, apologize, or anything.   It was very annoying - it seems to be consistent here, that they're not biggest concern is how much money they can get from you rather than the service they can provide.

Day 169 - Brasov PDF

With another night of bad sleep from the uncomfortable beds and almost non-existent pillows, we awoke and got ready to leave for Brasov.  There are many trains per day linking Bucharest and Brasov, so we didn't worry too much about rushing for the 9:30 train.  Before checking out, Mario went outside to exchange more Lei to Euros, so we could pay for our hotel without using their exchange rate.  They have more exchange booths here than anywhere we've ever seen, and the amazing thing is they give you within 1/2% of the online daily rate(although some booths refuse to give it to you for their posted rates)!  We changed in lots of Romanian currency so that we could stock up on our Euros.

Very very cold here at night.  We found out there's no way to control the heat - maybe that's why our room is only $20 :).    Luckily they give you very heavy blankets!   This is one of the darkest rooms we've stayed in (and I already said coldest), let me also add quietest.  A good setting for a night in Transylvania.    To our dismay, nothing happened in the night.   Around 5:30am, I awoke to birds singing outside.  Oh well, maybe tonight Dracula will come visit us.

Day 171 - Brasov and Wrapping up Romania PDF

We had all day to spend in Brasov today, as we had booked ourselves on the 9pm night train from Brasov to Budapest, Hungary.  The train ride is just about 11 hours long, and we are hoping it will be a more restful night than we had on the last night train!  Hopefully Romania and Hungary won't find it necessary to have everyone get out of the train at the border in the middle of the night, but you never know...
