We had a 5:10am flight this morning, so we were up at the painful hour of 3am to catch the flight. We had arranged for Dominick, our taxi driver last night, to pick us up at 3:30 am. When I made the booking at the Nairobi airport the previous day, I almost prepaid the return fee (as it was a good deal). However, my senses kicked back in, and I said I would pay the return fee to the driver the next morning. Lucky - as the driver was a no show. |

We spent the morning at the Egyptian Museum. The museum is quite overwhelming, with over 100,000 artifacts from the earliest Egyptian dynasties thru the Roman times. We opted not to hire one of the freelance guides waiting to greet visitors outside the museum. It seemed like most people were part of a large tour group, but we decided to go it alone. |

Tour day today - we headed to the lobby at 8:30am. The concierge, Semi, is the kindest person we've met on our trip. I will say that the people in Cairo in general are overly friendly - amazing. Anyways, he knows us by name, greets us with a huge smile, and although we had booked the tour the previous night with someone else, he knew we were on the tour, and we just chatted for a bit while we waited for the bus to pick us up. Nice guy! |

We slept in this morning before setting out for the day's sightseeing. On the agenda for today was Coptic (Christian), or Old Cairo, and then Islamic Cairo. We hired a cab to bring us to Coptic Cairo, for $3.50, but once we were in the cab, he started trying to sell us on a multi-hour trip where he would wait for us and then bring us to each site. As we didn't have a real map (and therefore had no idea how far it really was in between each sight), we decided to take him up on the offer. Besides, it was only going to cost us $15 for what would most likely be 4 hours of his time! |

Getting on a sleeping train from Cairo to Luxor. Sounds easy, eh? Not so. Before that story, one thing we have forgotten to mention is the immense amount of police on the streets. I can't recall going down a single street in Cairo that didn't have police or tourist police - most with automatic machine guns. I can understand the machine guns at the Egyptian museum, for example - guarding priceless artifacts. But at the pyramids - who's stealing those? :). |
