No Photos Today - flying to Tanzania all day. For me, today felt like the longest day of our entire journey. Apparently, something I ate last night for dinner was bad. Right when we were just saying how wonderful it was to be in South Africa where the water is clean and the food is fresh and good - I guess you never really know. We have been in several "safer" countries as far as food goes (Argentina, Brazil, and South Africa), and I guess we let our guard down a little too far. Despite feeling awful, there was no way I was going to miss these flights to Kilimanjaro today. We had 4 flights to take: Cape Town to Johannesburg to Dar Es Salaam to Zanzibar and finally to Kilimanjaro airport! I could tell from the start, this was not going to be a good day. |

No Photos Today - we're getting ready for Kili. Last night, our driver had mentioned that the tour operator would be sending someone over to our hotel at 8am to meet us and to talk about the upcoming climb. We weren't thrilled with the early morning wake up, but Mario got up early to meet with him (and let me recover). However, we were even more annoyed when no one ever showed up! This was the first of many frustrations with our tour operators. We hung out in our room until mid-day, when we decided to just give up on them. We had lunch in the Italian restaurant in the Impala Hotel (which also doubles for a Chinese restaurant). The food was okay, but I was still not feeling up to eating much of anything. |

No Photos Today - we're getting ready for Kili. We awoke just before 8 am to "meet" with our guide today. Turns out a no show again (they didn't give us a time this time though). At just before 10 am, we called over to the Ranger Safari tour office. We asked when they were coming - and they said in the evening. We were shocked, as we were first told Monday morning, then Tuesday morning, now Tuesday night. We were in need of equipment, and she said, no problem - we could pick them up on the way to the mountain. We were very scared of this, as we needed some eq to survive (such as a heavy jacket, baclava, etc. for the 15-20 degree summit), not to mention a sleeping bag. She was much nicer than the person yesterday, and said she'd call back. She did call back, and said he would come over at 4:30 pm (as if that made a difference with regard to our equipment). Frustrated, we just said ok and hoped for the best. |

We woke up at 7am, excited but nervous about the long 6 days ahead of us. My stomach was starting to feel better last night, but this morning I had to force down a small amount of the not-so-good buffet breakfast at the Impala. Livingston met up with us to let us know our rental items were outside in the car. We quickly ran back upstairs to get our things and checked out of the hotel. They are holding most of our stuff for us while we are gone, so all we have to bring on the hike are our small backpacks that we bought in town yesterday filled with a few shirts, our camelback, sunscreen, and our rental items. Every day, our porters will be carrying everything other than what we need on our backs for the day's hike. |

Our day began at 10,000 feet and would end at just under 13,000 ft. It was quite cold in the morning in our tent, however, we slept relatively well. While exiting the tent, we unfortunately discovered that the heel of my shoe was left out in the rain last night and was soaked. So much for waterproof shoes :) |
